Why Do My Power Windows Sometimes Stop Working?

Power windows are one of the most convenient functions in modern cars, and nothing keys you into this convenience more than when your windows stop working. There are several different components that are part of the power window system, which means that when something goes wrong, there could be a number of different causes that force you to seek window repair in Madison, TN.

The regulator

The window regulator, commonly referred to as the window track, is powered by a motor inside of your door. As with anything that is motor-powered, the possibility of overheating is ever present. If the motor does overheat, it is likely that your window will only temporarily experience issues opening and closing, and will return to normal functioning once the motor cools down. However, the condition of your motor could become an issue again in the future, and you will likely want to have a professional check to make sure the wiring is intact.

Another common issue is the freezing of the window glass and frame. When snow and ice make their way down and around your track and cause the glass and the frame to freeze, the motor has to expend extra energy to break free of the ice, and this overexertion can cause the motor to fail prematurely.

Cable pulley

Most regulators in power windows operate on a cable pulley system, and if there is a disconnect anywhere in the assembly, your window will stop working. If you are lucky, the issue with your pulley will be minor, and a little bit of lubrication will have your window working like new in no time. In more serious cases, though, the cable or pulley can become damaged or broken, as this is typically the segment of the power window system that has to sustain the most weight. If this happens, the entire cable mechanism will need to be replaced.

Individual window switches

There are other times when the motor and regulator assembly will be working fine, and the issue will lie within the individual power switch on a particular door. To determine whether this is the problem, test the switch both on the individual door, and the master switch on the driver’s door. If the master switch isn’t able to open or close any of the windows, it is probable that the motor is the issue. If the windows are responsive to the master switch, then it is likely that the switch on that particular door has burnt out and will need to be repaired.

Having a window that won’t go down is aggravating enough, but dealing with a window that won’t go back up can lead to a whole host of additional problems. No matter what is driving your need for automotive window repair in Madison, TN, we here at Madison Muffler & Auto Repair are ready to tackle your issue to help you avoid these difficulties.
