The 3,000-mile rule—and why it’s not always right
At one time, the common rule of thumb was that you should get your car’s oil changed about every 3,000 miles. For most folks, this averages out to the same time frame as about three months of driving. Nowadays, however, cars can often go as long as 5,000 miles—and even up to 10,000—without an oil change.
This is because we’ve moved on from older technology to newer, more innovative options. This includes the design of our cars. Car manufacturers today are focused on creating cars with more efficient parts, including engines, and these engines now require a higher quality form of engine oil to keep them running smoothly. On the one hand, you might be disappointed to learn it’s not the same oil as it was when you were growing up. But this is actually something to celebrate, because today’s oil is more technologically advanced—its synthetic (or synthetic blend) makeup allows it to withstand a breakdown in viscosity for much longer than its older cousins, and this means fewer oil changes for you.
New standards for oil changes
As any honest auto repair shop in Madison, TN should tell you, the recommended time between oil changes is now between 7,500 miles and 10,000 miles. It’s often best to change before you hit max mileage, just to be safe.
This number fluctuates for a number of reasons. One important factor is the age of your car. A common rule of thumb is this: if you drive a car that’s from 2007 or earlier, get the oil changed about every six months, or every 5,000 miles, whichever comes first. If you drive a car that’s from 2008 or later, you can get your oil changed a little less frequently, typically every six months or 7,500 miles.
Another important consideration is the way you drive. For example: Do you do most of your driving in the city or on the highway? Do you go off-roading a lot? Do you do a lot of towing, or have a construction job that requires your truck to carry heavy materials every day? Talk to your mechanic about your driving habits so they can help you assess the frequency of your oil changes.
